“The character of the Chihuahua is such that, once you have owned one, you will find it difficult to live without one. The character and personality of the Chihuahua are so endearing that one becomes passionately fond of the breed. They speak with their eyes and love with all their hearts. It is not amazing that so many assets, attributes and love could be packed into a dog of such diminutive size? Viva Chihuahua! - Jean Viljoen, The New Chihuahua Encyclopedia,2004 pg5”

Most pet shops will sell cheap dogs, mostly not pedigreed and mostly crossbreeds. You may end up with a dog with serious genetic problems. The biggest reason not to buy from a pet shop is that they get their dogs from puppy mills, where the dogs are treated badly, and the living conditions are horrible.
Most pet shops get there dogs from agents or farms and have no idea of the conditions of the breeding environment. We do not support this treatment of dogs and hope you will join us in doing this.
There is a very good reason why there are so few Chihuahua Breeders. It takes a very special dedicated person with a great love for the breed, who will sacrifice personal interests, finances, time and friendships to breed Chihuahuas.
It is extremely difficult to breed Chihuahuas and most Chihuahua pregnancies have issues. The Chihuahua breed has a big head and small body, which is a recipe for disaster if you think of delivering puppies, most pregnancies result in very expensive caesareans.
On top of difficult breeding, Chihuahuas rarely have litters of more than 2 puppies.
Breeders need to deal with fading puppies or puppies that struggle to suckle, and will need to tube or bottle feed the puppies every 2 hours. Breeders have many sleepless nights caring for mothers and puppies.
Chihuahua breeders breed for love and to improve the breed, it is not a get-rich-quick scheme; on the contrary you will mostly lose money initially.
It takes years of trial and error before you really become a skilled Chihuahua breeder.
The future of the Chihuahua breed depends on our Chihuahua Breeders.

I AM A BREEDER
I am a breeder who wants to learn everything I can about breeding and the safety of my girls and boys.
I am a breeder who never really knows it all and I am one who wrestles with decisions of conscience, convenience, and commitment.
I am a breeder who has sacrificed personal interests, finances, time, friendships, fancy furniture and deep pile carpeting. I have given up dreams of vacations more than 10 miles away or lasting more than 3 or 4 hours.
I am a breeder who goes without sleep in hours spent planning a breeding or watching anxiously over the birth process with my wonderful helper husband, and afterwards and for weeks, over every little wiggle or cry.
I am a breeder who skips going to many a holiday dinner because a litter is due or I can’t be away to long because Mother or babies need to be fed.
Some breeders are lucky enough to have friends and some family who truly understand and are supportive and do not hold it against you when you have to cancel plans or cannot make a family gathering.
I am a breeder whose lap is the greatest place for a Chihuahua or two to come for love and attention.
I am a breeder whose hands hurt painfully from arthritis, but are strong and firm and often soiled, but ever so gentle and sensitive to the thrusts of a puppy’s wet nose.
I am a breeder whose back and knees are usually arthritic from bending and sitting over the whelping box and puppy pen, but one strong enough to guide that new one to maturity.
I am a breeder whose shoulders are often heaped with responsibility, but are wide enough to support the weight of a thousand defeats and frustrations.
I am a breeder whose arms are always able to wield a mop, support an armful of puppies or lend a hand to a fellow breeder.
I am a breeder whose ears are wondrous things, sometimes red from being talked about, often deaf to criticism, yet always fine tuned to the whimper of an anxious puppy or adult Chihuahua.
I am a breeder whose heart is often broken, but beats strongly with hope everlasting and tries always to be in the right place.
